Preparing
for your trip
Culture
Shock
Some
level of culture shock will be apparent when you arrive
at your destination. Things can be very different from
life at home. It is always best to read up before you
go and talk to someone who may have been to the destination
before.
Try
to always book your first nights accommodation. After
your long flight you will be tired and want to sleep.
You don't want to spend hours searching for a room expecially
at peak tourist seasons.
Find
out in advance if there are any festivals and carnivals
on during your stay. If there is you should be in for
a treat but remember to have a room for the night.
Visas
and travel documents
Make
a note of important details including creditcard, travellers
cheques and passport numbers and keep them safe. These
can be stored in an email account (for security write
these in code so only you can understand). When using
internet cafes always remember to log out of your account.
If
you need to obtain a visa then remember to find out what
time the embassy or consulate is open. Get there ahead
of time to avoid the long queues and spending days hanging
around an embassy thats only open for only a few hours
a week.
Check
if the country you are visiting require an international
driving permit.

ABTA:
Make
sure the company you book your travel with is a reulated by
ABTA or ATOL.
Clothing:
Dress
for the occassion. Have a shave wear neat clothes - if you look
like a tramp you probably deserve to get pulled over by immigration.
In
colder climates try and wear multiple layers rather than a big
bulky coat which can become very annoying.
In
warmer climates try and wear loose fitting clothing of lighter
colours. Remember that in some countries dress standards are
often reserved so if you dont want the locals to stare or be
offended (especially in places of worship) it is best to dress
accordingly.
Think
very carefully about shoes as nothing takes up more space and
weight in your luggage.
Always
take a spare set of clothing and a toothbrush because when your
bags go to the north pole whilst you are in bangkok you will
be much more happier. Bags are very rarely lost forever but
often do go astray for a few days.
Try
and keep your money in different places. For out and about there
are money belts available and money holders especially designed
for travellers.
Avoid
taking valuable watches. cameras, jewellery they will almost
certainly be lost, stolen or broken on your travels. Try and
take cheaper replaceable items that do the same job.
