How to Plant a Bulb
in Earth
Bulbs really do add
to the year round appeal of your garden. They have long dormant
periods when they make few demands on your time. Buying good quality
bulbs and planting them in the right conditions is important and
helps you get the most from your bulbs. You can get bulbs that flower
at different times of the year. Most bulbs are sold in a dry state
in their dormant period. You can also find them in pots sold in
garden centres, in bud or about to flower. Dry bulbs should be planted
as soon as possible after you've bought them. Bulbs in flower can
be planted straight from the pot, or left to flower inside and then
planted as dry bulbs when they have died down.
What You Need:
Bulbs; a spade or fork; space in your borders to plant them; a rake;
labels to mark what's planted where. Optional: gardening gloves,
hand trowel.
Step 1
Dig out a hole in well prepared earth large enough to take a group
of your bulbs. Usually, you should plant bulbs at least twice their
own depth and width apart. Place the bulbs with their growing tips
pointing upwards.
Step 2
When you've got a group of bulbs in position, use your hand or a
trowel to draw the soil across them. Take care to keep the bulbs
in place and avoid damaging them.
Step 3
Use the back of your rake to firm the soil down over the space where
you bulbs are planted. Avoid treading on this area as you may disturb
or damage the bulbs.
Step 4
Label your bulbs with their type and variety, so you can avoid disturbing
them when they've died down.
